All I Want For Christmas Is... (4)

This is a feature/meme where I choose a book each week leading up to Christmas and say why it's made it onto my wishlist – and I'd love to see what books everyone else is hoping to get! I'll be posting my pick each Thursday, but you guys can link up and visit other people's posts all through the week.

This week's pick: Birthmarked by Caragh O'Brien

From Goodreads:

After climate change, on the north shore of Unlake Superior, a dystopian world is divided between those who live inside the wall, and those, like sixteen-year-old midwife Gaia Stone, who live outside. It’s Gaia’s job to “advance” a quota of infants from poverty into the walled Enclave, until the night one agonized mother objects, and Gaia’s parents are arrested.

Badly scarred since childhood, Gaia is a strong, resourceful loner who begins to question her society. As Gaia’s efforts to save her parents take her within the wall, she herself is arrested and imprisoned.

Fraught with difficult moral choices and rich with intricate layers of codes, BIRTHMARKED explores a colorful, cruel, eerily familiar world where one girl can make all the difference, and a real hero makes her own moral code.

I started reading this one in the bookstore, and although I didn't get very far before I had to leave, I was intrigued by the bit I did read. Just generally I like dystopian novels because they can be very creative and thought-provoking, and in particular I am interested in the whole premise of this "quota of infants" the Enclave needs (kinda creepy...) in Birthmarked.

  5. I think what I love about dystopian novels is that they can be so creepy and haunting, without being spooky and scary in a monsters-under-your-bed kind of way. It's more of an intellectual fear, rather than a physical, primal one. Does that make sense? Yet again, you've picked a fabulous book that will be going on my list. You're very bad for my TBR list, do you know that? :P
