Psychtember is Back!

That's right: it's September, which means it's time again for PSYCHTEMBER!

psychtember2012button1-2

I first hosted this event last year and was really pleased by the response it received, so I decided to bring it back for a second time. Basically, the purpose of the event is to highlight YA books that normally don't get that much attention: those involving mental health issues. I have a B.A. in psychology and still love learning about the subject, so I decided to combine my interests in YA and psychology, and create an event that spreads awareness of these books and topics.

Just like last year, there'll be reviews, guest posts by fellow bloggers, guest posts by mental health professionals, interviews with authors (some familiar faces and some new), and giveaways! If you weren't here for the first Psychtember and are interested in what it's all about, feel free to browse last year's posts.

Psychtember Question Box!This year, I've started up a Goodreads list for YA books with mental health issues published from 2000 onwards. There are a number of Goodreads lists for specialized topics, like YA about eating disorders, or YA dealing with violence/abuse, but no general list for recent YA books about mental health. I've only just created it, so if you'd like to help round it out, please feel free to add titles to the list, or vote for your favourites. (If you're not sure if a book qualifies, just ask!)

I'm also still looking for questions for Dr. Carolyn Kaufman, a clinical psychologist and writer who will be stopping by the blog later on in the event, so if you are wondering anything about psychology and writing, please leave your questions here! (Don't worry, it's anonymous :))

If you could spread the word in any way to let people know that Psychtember has begun, that would be awesome! And I'd love it if you'd grab either of these event buttons to add to your blog sidebar:

Disclaimer: I know that mental health issues can be a sensitive subject, so I'd like to point out that my posts are never intended to offend. No, I am not a mental health professional, just someone with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a passion for the field. I may get things wrong from time to time; if I do, you can always send me an e-mail about it! Also, I am not responsible for the content of the guest posts for the event — I don't like to censor so I have largely left the posts up to the writer's discretion. If you or a friend/family member is experiencing psychological distress, I recommend seeking out a mental health professional. This event is not meant to replace that type of help.

Psychtember Is Coming!

psychtember2012button1

You may have heard me talk about it before, but yes, Psychtember will be back again this coming September! It's a blog event focusing on YA books dealing with mental health issues, and there will be everything from reviews and author interviews to expert guest posts and giveaways. For an idea of what to expect check out the posts from last year's event.

Authors already on board for Psychtember 2012 include Adele Griffin, R. J. Anderson, Janet Ruth Young, Jackie Morse Kessler, Jennifer Brown, Jeannine Garsee, Trish Doller, Tabitha Suzuma, and Susan Vaught. I've been really pleased so far with the wonderful response!

I've created a couple of event buttons, so if you'd like to add one of them to your blog sidebar over the next couple months and spread the word, that would be awesome!

Also, if there are any topics, books, or authors in particular that would you like to see featured in this year's event, please let me know! (You can do so by filling out this survey, or just leaving a comment.) I can't promise anything but I'll take your suggestions into consideration :)

In My Mailbox (46)

In this meme, hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren, we share the books we've received, bought or taken out from the library. This post covers the past couple weeks.

For review:

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith - thanks to Hachette Book Group Canada!

Article 5 by Kristen Simmons — thank you, Tor Teen!

Jessica Rules the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey — this was a complete surprise to me when it arrived! Thanks very much to Thomas Allen & Son for the unsolicited copy :)

Slated by Teri Terry — thanks so much to Hachette Children's Books UK for shipping this all the way over here!

Gifted:

Cinder by Marissa Meyer — thanks to Raincoast Books for this finished copy! I was able to take it to the author event at Chapters Metrotown yesterday and get it signed, which was awesome :)

I went to the event with one of my IRL friends who is an avid reader just like me, and it was so much fun! It was the first YA author signing I'd ever attended, so I was really excited, and Marissa was very friendly :) Definitely looking forward to going to more in the future! Apparently Tahereh Mafi is coming in March for her novel Shatter Me, so I might go to that one too...

A signed bookplate and bookmark for The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe — thanks, Megan!

From the library:

Draw the Dark by Ilsa J. Bick
Say the Word by Jeannine Garsee
Tweet Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick
The Glass Demon by Helen Grant
The Prince of Neither Here Nor There by Seán Cullen
Tell Us We're Home by Marina Budhos
Peak by Roland Smith

Psychtember: Your Chance to Question An Expert!

I'm really pleased that there'll be several mental health professionals participating in Psychtember! In fact, Carolyn Kaufman, author of The Writer's Guide to Psychology, will be dropping by. Dr. Kaufman is a clinical psychologist, writer and writing coach, and her book offers a lot of great information in a concise package. More to the point, it's dead-on in terms of accuracy.

I'd love to give my readers this opportunity to suggest questions or topics for Dr. Kaufman to discuss. Are you wondering what misconceptions about psychology pop up most often in novels? How to tell when therapy is being accurately portrayed? Any burning questions about creating characters with mental illness?

Here's your chance to get an expert's opinion on writing and mental health! Just leave your questions in the comments below (or if you'd prefer you can e-mail me with them).

Get Psyched Up for Psychtember!

Mark your calendars, because in September I'll be hosting a month-long blog event! "Psychtember" will feature YA books focusing on mental health. I got my undergraduate degree in psychology and still have an interest in it, so I'd like to see this category of YA get some more attention! The event will be highlighting a mixture of books, both upcoming and recent releases (since our knowledge of mental health is continually changing). The featured books may deal with topics like eating disorders, depression, schizophrenia, and addiction. (Yes, this is why my "In My Mailbox" posts have included so many library books over the past couple weeks!)

Did you know?

You may know a friend or family member struggling with mental health problems, or even have had experience with it yourself. Since it's so significant in the teen years, I thought it would make sense to look at how mental health issues are portrayed in YA books — the disorders themselves as well as coping methods, treatment and recovery. I'm hoping this event will help to make these kinds of books more accessible to a wider audience.

There'll be reviews, guest posts, author interviews, and giveaways! And helping me out will be these awesome bloggers, many of whom have studied (or are studying) psychology:

Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing
Small Review
Musings of a YA Reader
Brave New Adventure
One Book at a Time
All of Everything
Musings of a Reader Happy
A Backwards Story

If you'd like to grab the button and spread the word, that would be much appreciated! :)

A Tapestry of Words

I'm still looking for more people to contribute, so if you're a blogger who reads YA and has a background or perspective related to psych, please contact me! Also, if there's a book you'd like to see featured, feel free to suggest it and I'll take it into consideration :)
