Waiting on Wednesday: Devine Intervention and Secret Letters

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and features books that we just can't wait to get our hands on!

Devine Intervention by Martha Brockenbrough

Goodreads' description:

"Heavenly writing, earthy characters, and humor that is wicked as hell.

Heidi is seventeen. Insecure. Unkissed. Unremarkable, she thinks, in every way but one: She has a guardian angel, Jerome, who whispers in her ear all day long, amusing her, confusing her, but hardly ever saying anything that might help her discover who she's meant to be.

Jerome is also seventeen (for the seventeenth year in a row.) There is only one thing he needs to do to graduate from heaven's soul rehabilitation program for wayward teenagers: Follow the 10 Commandments for the Dead, and in doing so, keep Heidi safe. Instead, he accidentally lets her drown.

Plucked from her body before she ever truly lives, Heidi wants more than anything to say goodbye to her family and best friend. Jerome, afraid he's going to be sent to the lowest level of Hell, wants to sneak her into heaven before he gets caught.

Neither realizes that Heidi has only 24 hours before her soul dissolves forever. And that might not be enough time for them to figure out how they were meant to live
."

Angels have been done a lot in YA, but this one sounds fresh — less of the typical paranormal bent to it, and more of a humorous angle. And I'm liking the whole 24-hour deadline, which will probably mean some quick pacing and plenty of tension!

Secret Letters by Leah Scheier

"Inquisitive and observant, Dora dreams of escaping her aristocratic country life to solve mysteries alongside Sherlock Holmes. So when she learns that the legendary detective might be her biological father, Dora jumps on the opportunity to travel to London and enlist his help in solving the mystery of her cousin’s ransomed love letters. But Dora arrives in London to devastating news: Sherlock Holmes is dead. Her dreams dashed, Dora is left to rely on her wits—and the assistance of an attractive yet enigmatic young detective—to save her cousin’s reputation and maybe even rescue a kidnapped heiress along the way.

Steeped in Victorian atmosphere and intrigue, this gripping novel heralds the arrival of a fresh new voice in young adult literature.
"

I love the premise of this one! Sherlock Holmes connection? Check. Victorian atmosphere and intrigue? Check. Hot enigmatic detective? Yep, sounds like a winner!

  1. I haven't read of an angel take quite like with Devine Intervention. It seems like you said, fresh and humorous. Totally unique. And the fact that Secret Letters makes a Sherlock Holmes connection AND is set in Victorian London make it an auto-buy :)
