Book Blogger Hop (22)

Yes, that's right...the Book Blogger Hop is back from the holidays! This awesome meme is hosted by Crazy-For-Books and this week's question is, "What book influenced/changed your life? How did it influence/change you?"

Well, I remember very clearly the series that broadened the type of book I read. When I was a kid I read mostly realistic middle-grade novels, and the few fantasy I tried I couldn't really get into or connect with (sorry C.S. Lewis fans, but for some reason The Chronicles of Narnia didn't cut it for me). Then when I was about 10 years old, while on a trip, I think I'd finished all the books I'd brought and wanted something new to read. My sister offered up her copy of Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. I was probably a bit skeptical but I started reading, and as soon as I was done I eagerly asked for and devoured book 2. And from then on, I was more inclined to give fantasy a try — and I'm so glad I did, because I've found so many books to enjoy in this genre!

This was the cover of the copy we had. Yep, pretty old!

  2. I couldn't get into the Narnia books either. I loved the BBC tv version, but the books were just so dry to me.

I can't wait to read Alanna! I swear I am making myself read it this year.

  3. I wasn't a big fan of the Narnia books either! I'm so happy to hear I wasn't the only one haha!

  4. I put Tamora Pierce as one of my most influential as well, though I said her Magic Circle series, as that was my first of hers. I had difficulty choosing just one though! Basically every book I've ever read influenced me! lol

Anyways, old follower just hopping by to say hi! =)

  5. I totally didn't enjoy the Narnia books, either! Glad it's not just me! I've never read anything by Tamora Pierce, but I've only heard good things about her, so I should probably look into her works.

Have a happy Friday and weekend, Danya!

  6. I love the Narnia books (but I have a thing for magical worlds they feed my overactive imagination)! But everybody is different so it works :)

  7. I wasn't a huge fan of Narnia when I was a kid either. But, honestly, I didn't like to read at all. I gave them a go a couple of years ago and while they're written well, they're not my favorite in the fantasy genre.

  10. This will probably come of something as a surprise but the book that changed/influenced my life (more than any other) is a non-fiction book. I know we all focus on novels and the fanciful fiction we love to read but The Four Work Week is the book that gets all the credit. I know the title sounds fictional but it really isn’t. Happy Book Blogger Hop Day!

  13. I'll keep in mind that Alanna was written before all those things were cliches! :)

  14. I have to admit that I loved Narnia. I was just that kind of kid. :)
One of the more influential books in my life was Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. It was an amazing read and it made me really think.
I hope your weekend is great!

  15. Hopping through. I really want to read Tamora Pierce. Is Alanna the best one to start with?
    Happy weekend!

  17. I love Alanna! She was my first heroine to menstruate - which was amazing! (yes, I was a bit shocked, too) A real woman - and for that I will love Tamora Pierce FOREVER. ;")
