This is a new feature I'm starting up, because as book bloggers we all know that there are too many books to read, and not enough time. I need to know which books are must-reads and which ones I can just plain ignore. This week: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
For which I turn to you, my readers! I'll pick a book each week that I'm wondering about, and you can tell me if I should GET IT...or just FORGET IT.
I'm going to state up front here that I am not a big fan of aliens. I enjoyed The Host by Stephenie Meyer, but it was more fantasy than sci-fi anyway. But: The 5th Wave has gotten such an overwhelming amount of positive buzz that it's caught even my sci-fi-wary interest. So I'm wondering... is this the kind of sci-fi book that can be enjoyed even by skittish, alien-shy readers? Or do you need to be a hardcore sci-fi fan to appreciate this book?
Also, does it REALLY live up to the hype? Let me know...vote, and then give me your opinion in the comments!
Okay so this one rocked my world! BUT I can think of a few people who went into it with major expectations and were left wanting. So if you can, try to lower your expectations a bit because it's not an absolutely perfect book. But I think it will be one that will stick with you! It has this feeling of suspense and paranoia that permeates the entire book and leaves you (or left me anyway) totally freaked out! I would recommend it even if you are not a huge sci fi fan.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the head's-up, Aylee! I'll try not to expect too much, lol. The atmosphere of suspense/paranoia does sound pretty wild...
DeleteI definitely liked it -- and it's very low on actual alien sci-fi elements, IMO. More of a survivalist type book for the first half. I think you should lower your expectations though -- I don't think it's worth major hype, but it is a great read and I think you'll probably like it :) (just be in the right mood for the genre!)
ReplyDeleteGood to know that the hardcore alien sci-fi aspects are kept to a minimum. Thanks for your thoughts on it, Nomes!
DeleteI'm probably a bit of the strange person out here...but I didn't really like the Fifth Wave! I felt like the world was very confusing, especially with the weird writing style and way of developing what was happening. There were lots of weird things that led to me never understanding what was happening and that was frustrating for me. However, I know lots of people love it!
ReplyDeleteThis one is on my TBR pile.
