Waiting on Wednesday: Katana and Article 5

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and features books that we just can't wait to get our hands on!

This week's picks:

Katana by Cole Gibsen

Goodreads' description:

"Seventeen-year-old Rileigh Martin wanted to spend her summer hanging out with friends, shopping, and working at a hair salon...too bad fighting ninja is a full time job in itself."

Well, it's a short summary but I always have a soft spot for books with Japanese themes. We haven't seen ninjas much in YA recently so that's fresh, and the cover is fun — the red really pops and I like the combination of modern with traditional.

 Article 5 by Kristen Simmons

Goodreads' description:

"New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police — instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior — instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested don’t usually come back.

17-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. That life in the United States used to be different.

In the three years since the war ended, Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the Federal Bureau of Reformation. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow. That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And what’s worse, one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved."

I know, the dystopian genre is getting saturated, but I do like the scarily realistic sound of this one. If she remembers what the U.S. used to be like, then it really is set soon in the future. And the dilemma set up with Ember being in love with one of the officers who arrests her mom makes it all the more interesting...

Katana reminds me of the Next Karate Kid with Hillary Swank :)

  3. Katana is slowly growing on me. I wasn't sure about the description, but then the cover came out and ever since then it's been wearing me down. I hadn't heard about Article 5 before! I agree, I'm a little worn on dystopians, but I'm really intrigued by the premise of this one. I like how it's set so close to now. Hopefully it actually ties in to things going on now.

  4. Once again, great picks! I'm still lapping up the dystopians, so Article 5 is definitely going on my list.

  5. Love teh Japanese themed cover of Katana. Wish there was a longer summary too.

  6. I hadn't heard about either of these, but they both look great! Article 5 looks like one of the more interesting dystopians being published soon, and Katana's ninja element does sound fun.

  7. Article 5 sounds awful and terrifying... but in a good way, lol. I'd be interested in seeing a longer summary for Katana too!
