Waiting on Wednesday: Small Town Sinners and The Day Before

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and features books that we just can't wait to get our hands on!

Both this week's picks have covers that were just revealed last week:

Small Town Sinners by Melissa Walker

Goodreads' description:

"The story of Lacey Anne Byers, a small town girl who is excited to star in Hell House, her church's annual haunted house of sin, until a childhood friend reappears and makes her question her faith."

Which is pretty brief...so here's a much more detailed blurb from the author's blog:

"Lacey Anne Byer is a perennial good girl and lifelong member of the House of Enlightenment, the Evangelical church in her small town. With her driver's license in hand and the chance to try out for a lead role in Hell House, her church's annual haunted house of sin, Lacey's junior year is looking promising. But when a cute new stranger comes to town, something begins to stir inside her. Ty Davis doesn't know the sweet, shy Lacey Anne Byer everyone else does. With Ty, Lacey could reinvent herself. As her feelings for him make Lacey test her boundaries, events surrounding Hell House make her question her religion. Does falling in love mean falling out of faith?"

I often enjoy YA books that involve teens questioning religion, as long as it isn't done in a kind of preachy way or is sending a really obvious message. I am a little confused about the two descriptions though...one of them mentions a childhood friend reappearing, and the other a total stranger...which is it? Or are there both?

Though the apple symbolism has been used a fair bit in covers, I like the color it brings, and the girl in the background with her hand over her face is intriguing.

The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder

Goodreads' description:

"Sometimes there's no turning back.

Amber's life is spinning out of control. All she wants is to turn up the volume on her iPod until all of the demands of her family and friends fade away. So she sneaks off to the beach to spend a day by herself.

Then Amber meets Cade. Their attraction is instant, and Amber can tell that he's also looking for an escape. Together they decide to share a perfect day: no pasts, no fears, no regrets.

The more time that Amber spends with Cade, the more she's drawn to him. And the more she's troubled by his darkness. Because Cade's not just living in the now--he's living each moment like it's his last
."

I don't think I've read anything by Lisa Schroeder before, but this one sounds a little different than some of her other YA novels (many of which feature ghosts, I believe?) Anyway I like the dark, edgy sound of this one and I think the premise of sharing one perfect day together brings something fresh to it.

What books are you waiting on?

  2. Wow! The Day Before does sound really edgy and different! Isn't that everyone's dream - live one perfect day with no regrets and no inhibitions? Combined with the title, though, it's a little ominous - I'm very curious what's going on with Cade. Great pick!
