Book Blogger Hop (17)

It's time again for the Book Blogger Hop! This awesome meme is hosted by Crazy-For-Books and this week's question is,"Since Thanksgiving is coming up next week, let's use this week's Hop to share what we are most thankful for and what our holiday traditions are!"

Well, I'm Canadian so we celebrated Thanksgiving back in October. But I'll play along anyway :) I'm always thankful for the support of my family, for books and the fun I have interacting with the book blogger community, and of course for chocolate.

As for Thanksgiving traditions...well, we're vegetarian, so there is never any turkey happening at our house. We always have a really fabulous dinner though, and delicious pumpkin pie, which I LOVE.

New-ish items on the blog:

- I am currently having a giveaway for Kiersten White's Paranormalcy. I really enjoyed this one, and you can read my review and enter the giveaway here (you don't even need to be a follower, though if you'd like to, please do!)

- Getting into the holiday spirit? Share a book from your Christmas wishlist each week in my "All I Want For Christmas Is..." meme! Link your post up for this week here :)

  3. I'm not taking part in the hops this week but Happy Friday!

I know what you mean about Nathaniel but perhaps its because they're childhood friends. I thought Vicky was annoyingly bossy too and Nicky is more like me but she too could be seen as a bit irritatingly naive. I think I like Nicola and the Viscount's plot just a tiny bit better because the story of a poor girl in society is more appealing to me and I love how Nicky is so loyal to her family's home. They both have their highlights.
Yes, I think favourite does depend on which one you've read last to a certain extent.

I hope you enjoy your weekend :)

  10. I've been following you for awhile, Danya, but I never would have known that you're a vegetarian too unless I read this post. Yay! I didn't have it this year, but usually I make a bunch of veggies, miso mushroom gravy, a tofurkey, and homemade cranberry sauce for Canadian Thanksgiving. Wonders what kind of yumminess you create. :)

  11. Hopping by. My daughter is a vegetarian and I really admire the way she manages it -- especially at times like Thanksgiving when we're guests in someone else's home and we're all eating turkey and trimmings.

  13. Hopping through. No need for turkey on Thanksgiving. I've always thought it was the most boring part of the meal.

  15. Hello! I found you through the Book Blogger Hop and now you have another follower :) Mmmmm Pumpkin pie, my favorite too. I am making some of that and pumpkin bread from fresh pumpkin frozen in my freezer. That was a real mess cleaning up but oh so good. Take care, and have a wonderful Sunday!

  16. Yay indeed! I’ve been a vegetarian for…wow…8 and a half years and my sister has been for at least a couple more than me (now she’s vegan though). How long have you been one, Danya? When I go home to have Thanksgiving with my family, we often have some sort of veggie pasta, perogies, veggies, salad, etc. because my dad’s family is half Italian and half Ukrainian. Most of the family members eat meat though, so there is turkey and all the regular Thanksgiving items, oftne with pumpkin pie. I love making pumpkin pie and the last time I made a great one. Didn't make it there this year...it's pretty far to travel for just a day or two.

  17. I think you're really lucky to have been raised a vegetarian. It's so much healthier and so much better for the environment.

I was raised eating meat, but the thing is that whether it's because my parents weren't exactly the best cooks or for some other reason, I just wasn't that into it the older I got. When they began having veggie options at the local supermarket when I was a teen, my sis and I would get those from time to time. Also at one point I worked in a fast food resto and had to pre-cook industrial sized boxes of bacon, I'd get terrible headaches from it and so for around 11 or 12 years I just stopped eating pork. At uni, most of the time I ate like a veg because I felt that the meat options were too gross looking, but finally when I was in my 3rd year, I was friends with someone who was a vegan and they made an argument that I understood and couldn't refute. I was almost decided on making the switch, but the texture of the meat I ate the last two times solidified my decision firmly. I started eating fish occasionally a couple of years ago, but I'll never go back to chicken or red meat for sure: it grosses me out. (So yeah, I'm not a full out veg anymore, but often do eat a vegan diet... which is so tasty).

  18. That’s not what I meant about growing up vegetarian. I don’t think you missed anything either, which is part of the reason that I’m a vegetarian now. :) I can certainly imagine that you would have been teased because you were a vegetarian. I remember people laughing at others because they had alfalfa sprouts on their sandwiches when I was in elementary school, which seems so ridiculous. I’ve also been called out and forced to explain my decision to be a vegetarian among adults, too though. On one occasion, someone I was slightly acquainted with and his ex-veg guest went on and on through a dinner about how was I getting enough protein and about why she, as a high-performance athlete feels so much better now that she eats chicken and fish. She said that she was always lethargic as a veg. I stuck out because it was one of the few restos in the city that really doesn’t have any entrees for vegetarians.

Of course, I've also felt pressured by vegans (rarely but sometimes) to become vegan as well. Personally, I just want people to be able to make their own choices about these things. If someone wants to be veg or vegan fine. If they want to eat meat, it's fine with me too as long as they don't try to get me on their side. I've made the decision that works for me, and I want everyone to be able to do the same. :)

  19. Ha! I know the feeling from my brief time in Japan and South Korea last year. There was at least one occasion where I bit into something – a bakery bun – only to find that I had to discretely dispose of it because it was full of meat. It was better when I was with friends or my sister who was living in S.K., but even then occasionally we had to pick through our meal to get rid of the meat.
