Waiting on Wednesday: Lovetorn and Destined

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and features books that we just can't wait to get our hands on!

This week's picks:
Lovetorn by Kavita Daswani

Goodreads' description:

"When Shalini’s father gets a new job in L.A., she is torn away from her life in India and the boy to whom she’s been betrothed since she was three. L.A. is so different, and Shalini dresses and talks all wrong. She isn’t sure she’ll survive high school in America without her fiancĂ©, Vikram, and now she has to cope with her mom’s homesickness and depression. A new friend, chill and confident Renuka, helps Shalini find her way and get up the courage to join the Food4Life club at school. But she gets more than just a friend when she meets Toby—she gets a major crush. Shalini thinks she loves Vikram, but he never made her feel like this.

In Lovetorn, Shalini discovers that your heart ultimately makes its own choices, even when it seems as if your destiny has already been chosen.

Author Kavita Daswani has always been fascinated by child marriages and betrothals, and this story of a traditional girl from India, who is exposed to so many more freedoms and experiences after being dropped in a completely alien culture, is a fresh and contemporary look at the subject."

We don't get a lot of books about arranged marriages, but it's an interesting twist on the love triangle that has become so standard to YA novels. Sounds like there's a great meeting of cultures going on in this one!

Destined by Jessie Harrell

Goodreads' description:

"When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

Destined is a fresh and heartachingly romantic retelling of the Cupid & Psyche myth from debut novelist, Jessie Harrell."

I've always liked the myth of Cupid and Psyche — actually, it's probably my favourite Greek myth! I'm curious as to Cupid in this one....is he the "one creature even the gods fear"? And what is the prophecy? I'm feeling like I need to brush up on my Greek mythology!

  5. I like the sound of Destined! Maybe the gods fear Cupid because he can reduce them to love sick puppy dogs lol. I dont know, falling for Cupid doesn't sound horrible but it might be totally different in the book. Looking forward to reading it
