Waiting on Wednesday: Deadly & A Tale Dark and Grimm

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and features books that we just can't wait to get our hands on!

My picks this week:

Deadly by Julie Chibbaro

Goodreads' description:

"A mysterious outbreak of typhoid fever is sweeping turn-of-the-century New York. Every week more people fall ill, and despite thorough investigation, there's no cause in sight. It's not until the city's most unlikely scientist -- sixteen-year-old Prudence Galewski -- takes a job as an assistant in a laboratory that the evidence begins to fall into place. It seems one person has worked in every home the fever has ravaged: Mary Mallon, an Irish immigrant dubbed "Typhoid Mary" by the press."

Not such a huge fan of the cover, though I do like the silhouette effect - but I'm excited about the premise! Gotta love those historical fiction books where the heroine flouts a lot of societal rules, and the scientific mystery aspect of it sounds intriguing.

A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

Goodreads' description:

"In this mischievous and utterly original debut, Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm-inspired tales. As readers follow the siblings through a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind (and beyond) the bread crumbs, edible houses, and outwitted witches.

Fairy tales have never been more irreverent or subversive as Hansel and Gretel learn to take charge of their destinies and become the clever architects of their own happily ever after."

I think Hansel & Gretel was always one of my least favorite fairy tales (that witch scared me!), along with Rumpelstiltskin, but I like the concept of them wandering in and out of other tales. It sounds promising!

What books are you waiting on?

  4. That Deadly cover is not too bad although they could have chosen a better background color, the storyline is also really interesting

  11. Deadly sounds interesting. I'm wondering if it's purely historical fiction or if there's some sci fi / fantasy mixed in.

  12. I just saw Deadly somewhere else recently. It definitely sounds like something I'm going to want to read! The cover art does sort of seem like a bizarre choice. I don't think I'm bothered as much by the silhouette as I am by the color scheme. It really just doesn't seem to fit with the historical fiction-y sounding plot...ya know?
