I LOVE fairy tale retellings (obvs) but I don't like books that redo books, no matter what books they are. I'm sure it's a horrible double standard, and I've thought about it A LOT, why I'm okay with one and not the other, and I pretty much have decided that with a fairy tale retelling, it's just such a part of US and our cultures that there isn't really an author... (Even when there is...) But, I totally get annoyed when I hear that a book is a rewrite of another book. I think- Wow, can't you just come up with your own idea?

Seriously- I'm a judgmental snob. Judge me if you want... I'm at peace with that. ;)Ashleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07895603279815878376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076115639598447002.post-31314482668170356472012-06-01T07:49:42.131-07:002012-06-01T07:49:42.131-07:00You raise some really good points here, and I have...You raise some really good points here, and I have to agree with pretty much everything you've said. I especially like your checklist at the end—very helpful! I've been working on a retelling, so I'll be sure to use this with my WiP.

Oh, and I agree with you on Wuthering Heights. What a terrible story. Team Jane Eyre (& Charlotte Bronte) all the way! :)Jaime Morrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03023932422477544525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076115639598447002.post-53841159588353906152012-05-31T19:07:04.778-07:002012-05-31T19:07:04.778-07:00I personally can't get enough of retellings, t...I personally can't get enough of retellings, though sometimes if one retelling is beyond fabulous, other straightforward retellings are never as good (I'm thinking of Juliet Marillier's DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST in particular compared with any other book telling the same tale).

I loved Leah's post; thank you for sharing it again with new readers! :)

I had a weird dream a couple of months ago that was a litttle like two fairy tales mashed with an original, and I've been developing it in my head and it's mostly original. I would never call it a fairy tale, though it may read a little like one because there are common elements. I know what you mean! :)Bonnie @ A Backwards Storyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02988547424004889874noreply@blogger.com
